HHA vs Spot Hogg vs Black Gold

Updated: Dec 12, 2023

Finally had the time to compare these 3 sights extensively

To preface , all 3 sights are dovetail sights , and were adjusted to be the exact same distance from peep to sight as one another for even comparison while testing them, all sights have .019 top pin and .010 the rest . Also, there is no one clear winner in what's a better product , they are all great products , however there is a clear winner for me as to what the best sight for me is .

HHA Optimizer King PIN 3 pin housing ( very similar to tetra max 4 pin)

Pros :

-The highly adjustable hard stop pin .

-Sight tape magnifier

-Tape is located on the outside

-Easy to adjust the lock to never have to lock it

-Pins are easily adjustable to the lighting situation you're in (manually )

-Easy 2nd and 3rd axis adjustments

-Easy on the fly adjustments

-Options for a second wheel for a different set up

-Sight tape is clear and easy to read

Cons:

-the pins over all are pretty meh

-Only 1 yardage indicator for multiple pin sight

Overview:

Stellar sight this has been my sight of choice for about 5 years or so now . And I've killed a pile of stuff with it and shot alot of tournaments, I really am a fan of it . However the pins are rather lack luster and often blow out for me compared to the other 2 brands on this list . Also after using spott hogg 3 pin indicator system that would be a must for me . I love the magnifier on the sight wheel for archery hunting because it makes for a smooth and steady low movement adjustment of the sight . The rheostat dial on the king pin is also lack luster imo . But the tetra max this is better on . However there wasn't enough of a difference between the two models to warrant an upgrade from me . Over all HHA has a phenomenal warranty and the product is incredible aswell, with a smooth operation.

BLACK GOLD PURE 75

Pros:

-Micro adjust windage, elevation, and pins

-Pins auto adjust to the sunlight to keep consistent pin brightness all day .

-Toughest pin in the industry imo

-Awesome pins very little halo effect

-Multiple pin indicators ( available)

- Easy set up

-hha tapes work for lower speed / women bows

Cons:

-Tape is on the inside

-Roller knob is kinda awkward sometimes but once you're used to it, it's alright

-Gears are lack luster you can strip them although rare it happens

- hard stop only at the top

Overview :

Black gold is a pretty popular option these days and they have to have some of if not the best pin in the industry . Always clear to look at and always consistent aswell as bomb proof tough . The big down side to black gold for me is the awkward roller knob , and the tape being on the inside . For me personally I hate tapes on the inside I find it more cumbersome to make adjustments especially in a spot and stalk situation you almost have to turn the bow sideways to adequately see the tape and make an adjustment , I've just never been a fan of that . The new addition to multiple pin indicators is a plus for me though.

Again they have a phenomenal warranty and are a great product

Spot Hogg Fast Eddie XL w/ 3 pin horizontal MRT

Pros:

-3 pin indicators

-tape on outside

-adjustable mrt rings

-bright pins

- smooth adjustments but stiff aswell ( feels robust )

- Easy set up

-hard stop bracket is adjustable

- tons of adjustability for maximum yardage even with slower set ups

Cons:

-physical weight

-mrt pin housing ( horizontal ) has alot of adjustability some of it is uneeded

- 2nd and third axis are easy to adjust but can be cumbersome to access at times

- pins are always bright

- no magnifier

Overview :

The spot hogg had been a sleeper for me for years everyone seems to love them but I've always been happy with my HHA so never had a reason to try one until doing this comparison , and I must say I've been missing out I feel like , the adjustable 3 pin indicator is a breeze to set up and easy to adjust for on the fly adjustments . The housing itself also has a ton of adjustments for optimal range availability. My only downside right off the bat is that the pins are so bright all the time which is okay with the .010 but the .019 gets to be a little much at times, and after some time with this sight it does take some time to get the dial bar screws just tight enough to not rattle, but loose enough to not be hard to use the dial. Also one thing this 3 pin horizontal has that the triple stack doesn't have is the ability to adjust the left and right position of the pins individually which I'm also not a fan of because any vertical adjustment you make to the pins you have to re-enter then horizontally in the housing , if you use the UNO archery sight tape app on your phone it's easy to make this adjustment but it Is a added step , you could avoid this by going to the triple stack but I just don't like vertical pins as much as horizontal pins personally . So I can deal with that . The physical weight of this sight is the heaviest of the three but I will say it is very robust and durable .

Overall another great option.

Final thoughts:

You really can't go wrong with any of these sights , they all have their strong points HHA with their tapes and wheels , black gold with their pins , spott hogg with fur ability and adjustability . The right answer for the best sight is hard to pick .

However for me I'd rank them in this order

HHA

SPOT HOGG

BLACK GOLD

I hope this over view helps some people out .
